Samsung T3 vs T5 vs T7
My wife bequeathed me a Samsung T3. It is plenty fast although only USB 3.1 gen1. However it's running out of space. T5 and T7 are its replacements. Comparison:

Are there any good alternatives? Samsung makes unreliable refrigerators and overpriced cellphones, but they are certainly a master of the SSD.
TNs are formatted exFAT. I don't like exFAT because it lacks permissions and ownership info. Does anybody have experience reformatting as NTFS? It seems to be a supported operation.

You can buy a case and install any drive you want.
Pick the port you like. USB C, USB 3 or Thunderbolt. Pick the drive you like.
Some of the cases even come with a screwdriver .
You'll save money. Have total control over what's inside the case. Size ,speed or cost.

Fair enough. However I don't think it'll save money because the 1TB Samsung T7 costs $150 and a case + 1TB SSD costs almost that much.
I see SATA cases, but do you know of any M.2 cases with USB 3.1 gen2? Thanks.

just search for NVME USB 3.2 . I don't know where you are but I just checked amazon.com and amazon.uk both are showing various options.
Do you need gen 1 or gen 2? 10 or 20 mb speeds

Sorry didn't see you mentioned gen 2. Both gen 1 and gen 2 are out there.

Thanks Nick. I searched Amazon for M.2 instead of NVMe. Amazon search isn't the best.

Cases for M.2 SATA SSDs seem to be USB 3.0 max., but that's just a guess:

Here's a case for M.2 NVMe SSDs with USB 3.1 Gen 2:

Thanks Patco.
This makes sense because SATA 3 maxes out at 6Gbps, which is not much more than USB 3.0 at 5Gbps.
I doubt that M.2 speeds have maxed out yet, but 2 lane PCI is 16Gbps, better matched with USB 3.1 gen2 at 10 Gbps. Best SSD write speeds are still below 4Gbps however. It seems odd to me that best SSD read speeds are often lower. [userbenchmark.com]
Regarding my NTFS question, this is somewhat risky because MacOS 11 does not support NTFS without additional software installed. Ah for the good old days of Linux!
